Matariki

 Last term we did lots of learning all about Matariki.

We learnt about the different meanings of each of the nine stars in the book Te Kāhui o Matariki.  We created some collaborative art pieces to show what each star symbolises. These are on display in the Takahe Hub (The Galaxy Room) if you would like to see them up close!

We completed some writing to share with others who might not know much about Matariki.  Here are some of our pieces of writing:

MATARIKI                                                            

Matariki is the maori new year to celebrate nine or seven stars [whetu].Matariki is in early June or May. To celebrate matariki I would use fireworks. Celebrating matariki is important to celebrate because the whetu [stars] are about life. The things that you can do at matariki are string games and a whole lot of other stuff. You can dance if you want to. You can eat if you want to.I love songs about matariki.My favorite part of matariki are flying kites.

Matariki is a group of 9 or 7 whetu. Matariki comes in late May or early June. People celebrate matariki by having a hariki(feast.) and playing with sparklers. We spend time with whanau(family). Ururangi controls the wind.Matariki is the star that controls life and well being.Tupu-a-rangi controls the trees and birds. Waita controls the ocean and food that is in the ocean. Hiwa-i-te-rangi controls goals. Pohutakawa is the star that controls people who have passed away. Waiti controls the fresh water.Tupu-a-nuku controls food from the ground. Waipuna-a-rangi controls rainfalls.

Waiti is freshwater food and bodies. Waita is the ocean and the food that comes from the ocean. Tupu-a-nuku is the food that comes from the ground. Tupu-a-rangi is                    the trees and things that grow on the surface. Pohutukawa means those who have passed away. Who celebrates  matariki mostly people from New Zealand and other countries.
